About Peaktle — A Mountain Geography Puzzle

Peaktle is a free educational guessing game for mountaineers, geography lovers, hikers, and trivia fans. Each puzzle challenges you to identify a real mountain by reading progressively revealed clues built from public elevation and climbing-history data.

The dataset spans 500+ famous peaks across every continent — the Himalayan and Karakoram giants above 8,000m, the volcanic summits of the Andes and Cascades, the classic Alpine 4,000ers, African rift volcanoes, Seven Summits, national high points from Australia to Antarctica, and iconic climbing objectives worldwide.

All figures are approximate and intended for educational and entertainment purposes only.

How to Play Peaktle

  1. Choose Daily Puzzle (same mountain worldwide via UTC), Weekly Challenge, or Unlimited Practice.
  2. Read the first clue — usually the vaguest, like continent or elevation band.
  3. Type your guess into the box. Autocomplete will help you find the right spelling.
  4. Each incorrect guess reveals a new, more specific clue — country, mountain range, prominence, or first-ascent year.
  5. You have 7 guesses and receive up to 7 progressive clues to identify the mountain. Correct answer ends the round.
  6. Share your result with the "Copy Summit Report" button — no spoilers, just colored squares.

Mountain Terminology Glossary

Elevation: Height of the summit above mean sea level — the number most people mean by "how tall" a mountain is.
Prominence: How much a peak rises above the lowest contour line that encircles it without touching a higher summit. High prominence means a mountain stands independently rather than as a sub-peak of a larger massif.
Range: The connected group of mountains a peak belongs to, such as the Himalayas, Andes, or Alps.
First ascent: The first confirmed successful climb to the summit, along with the climbers credited.
Eight-thousander: One of the 14 mountains on Earth that rise above 8,000 meters, all located in the Himalayas or Karakoram.
Massif: A compact group of connected peaks forming a single geological unit, often containing one dominant summit.
